Adaptive Reuse

2008 MacArthur fellow Walter Kitindu, multimedia artist, composer and builder who creates hybrid instruments out of turntables and strings. He describes his work as adaptive reuse and explains “if you limit your palette and you limit your tools you have to think more creatively about how you use them, and sometimes that leads to more novel solutions.”

  1. I’m reminded of Jasper Johns remarks about “painting what the mind already knows.” (explaining why he painted targets). The paradox that liberating oneself from the need to invent can lead to something deeper and more surprising.
